That sounds good. If the film you're thinking about uploading was made between 1950-1963 inclusive, then you can search to see if it's copyright has been renewed on the the following site:
If you get too many results, click on "set search limits" at the bottom right of the page, then select motion pictures as "item type". Also, you can limit your range of years by typing 1950 in the first box beside "date" and 1964 (films can be copywritten the year after release) into the other box and then clicking on the white dot beside "range". Once you've done this, click "set search limits" and that will bring you back to the search page and you can continue searching.(If your search keeps failing, you can reload the page and start again from stratch.)
Also, some online companies sell public domain films like filmchest.com, desertislandfilms.com and buyoutfootage.com, so you could their list to double-check and for some older films.

Thanks, Evioine. I tried the copyright search and it looks like we're good to go on one film, which is 1950. The other is 1938, so who knows.

Your second idea of searching PD publishers lists is a practical one, and I have done it this way before but never felt completely assured. Thanks again.
